C’est la Vie at Artspace

An emerging name on the art circuit, Brendon Cahill mounts his third solo exhibition at Artspace from 7 – 28 June 2008.

Entitled vi vi - alluding to the Latin word “vivus” meaning living -  the works relate broadly to the process of creating, shaping and interacting with life.

His works investigate and interrogate the phenomenon of mythologies, both old and new. Cahill’s fascination with both religion and technology is explored here for the insights that these forces reveal about the mechanisms of humanity.

Through quietly reflective sculptures and iconographic prints, Cahill explores the mechanisms by which mythologies function as a cultural lens or complex language. They are used as a narrative to decode and describe the external world.

Vi vi also explores the ways in which mythologies act to create, or mould the world around us and are a way to synthesis meaning around events or occurrences.

Vi vi constructs as a contemporary creation myth.  The works draw from technological and scientific iconography, and infuse them with older forms of mythology, like animism and Western creation myths.

Cahill was awarded a merit award on the Sasol New Signatures competition in 2005. He has since mounted two small solo exhibitions at the Aardklop Arts Festival in Potchefstroom in both 2005 and  2007 entitled ‘Symbiosis’ and ‘Protokol’ respectively. Cahill most recently participated in a group exhibition at MOMO Art Gallery in Johannesburg to coincide with the 2007 SA Fashion Week.

Vi vi  will be opened on Saturday 7 June at 12h00 by Thokozani Mthiyane, poet, painter and storyteller. Mthiyane is a poet, driven to give a more visual dimension to the experience of poetry, and thus entered the realm of visual art. Vi Vi will run until 28 June 2008.

Artspace is open from 10h00-17h30 Tuesday – Friday, 10h00- 15h30 on Saturdays.
