Space Fusion at Artspace

Artspace, now located in the heart of the artstrip in Rosebank, launches with a dynamic new exhibition entitled Space Fusion.

The new gallery opens on the 5th  of March at 18h30 – the exhibition opening speaker is acclaimed architect Jeremy Rose who was responsble for the design of the new space.

The show presents a dialogue between art and design, process and product, real and virtual spaces through photography, sculpture and interior design.

Artists and exhibitors include,
Sculpture: Kevin Brand, Wilma Cruise, Guy du Toit , Bevan Thornton, Strangelove
Industrial Design:  Twiice International, Liam Mooney for Whatiftheworld / Design Studio
Photography: Carla Crafford , Gerda Genis,  Bongiwe Mchunu, Raymond Preston, Thobeka Ndabula, Dale Yudelman , Dudu Zitha

Says curator and director, Teresa Lizamore, “The exhibition is a fitting way to mark our move. The combination of fine art, photography by some of our top photographers, and the more practically orientated discipline of industrial design offers viewers many access points from which to engage with the exhibition, and our new space.

Art is about integrating the spaces  we live in and the spaces occupied by our minds. It is not separate from everyday living, and I wanted to highlight this.”

Established in 2001, by Teresa Lizamore, Artspace has been showing the work of talented up and coming, as well as established contemporary South African artists for seven years.

The gallery has gone from strenth to strength in the past seven years, with several sellout shows at its location in Fairland, as well as hosting shows at Gallery 157 in Rosebank, and at Constitution Hill.  The success of Artspace is thanks in part to the boom in the art industry (both locally and internationally) and of course to the efforts of its director, Teresa Lizamore.

Lizamore has developed a sound career in the industry, serving as the curator for the Sasol art collection for the past 25 years.. She has also served as advisor and curator to Rand Merchant Bank for the past 15 years, and more recently has been appointed to develop a collection for the  ATKV (Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuurverenging).  She started the Telkom art collection and built it for five years, and she also acted as the art consultant for the  formalisation of the first Brett Kebble Art Awards in 2003.

Artspace takes up a new home at Shop 1, 142 Chester Court, Jan Smuts Avenue, alongside industry heavyweights such as Warren Siebrits Modern and Contemporary, and David Krut Art Projects and Gallery, and opposite the Goodman Gallery. The venue has been designed by architects Mashabane Rose, architects responsible for the Apartheid Museum, Hector Pietersen Museum, as well as several significant art related spaces including University of Johannesburg’s Art Centre and Goodman Gallery Cape.

Space Fusion will run from the 5 – 29 March 2008.
