Triangulate the Death Rate by Murray Turpin
Triangulate the Death Rate by Murray Turpin opens at Artspace Gallery on 10 August 2010
Artist Murray Turpin presents a new body of work entitled Triangulate the Death Rate, which is "a tale of death, love, politics, identity and geometry". This solo exhibition will open at Artspace gallery in Rosebank on 10 August 2010, and runs for only 7 days!
"My art is an intervention," says Turpin of his blitzkrieg exhibition. "It's a happening rather than a product"
Speaking about his work, Turpin posits that "poverty stricken and politically disenchanted people aren't always desperate and violent or are they"
A series of ideas rather than a resolution, he continues.
"Red, White or Black. Form need not follow function. Constructs sell art, not artist. Less is more and so always be thankful for what you have, always. (Reflecting and deflecting contemporary South African socio-economics and identity, Materialism and Behaviour). The truth and art may be of little consequence in the end with a gun to your head. Unseen moments, repressed memories. Blood is the new black".
Turpin's thoughts are presented as a multimedia exhibition, with paintings, performances, video and sculpture. His work questions the "white face or black masks" and the "black face and the white masks". The exhibition also asks questions like: "will I die here or will I thrive here" & "African people aren't always black or are they"
Turpin has received critical acclaim internationally and has curated a number of exhibitions locally, as well as exhibiting his own work widely in Cape Town, Australia, Taiwan amongst other countries. This is Turpin's fifth solo exhibition, his debut solo exhibition was at Moja Modern Contemporary in Parktown in 2007. He also had a solo exhibition at Gordart Gallery in October 2008.
Born in South Africa on 3 September 1982. Turpin studied towards a BA Fine Arts Degree at the University of the Witwatersrand, JHB, finished his fourth honours year (2004) and now lives, works and performs where ever the next invitation to exhibit or performance takes him.
The exhibition opens at Artspace, 1 Chester Court, 142 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, 18h00 on 10 August 2010. Please join us for wine and to meet the artist.
Artist, curator and academic Gordon Froud will open the exhibition. Froud is a South African artist with extensive experience of exhibiting and curating shows both locally and internationally. He is also a teacher and currently sculpture lecturer at the University of Johannesburg. He was the owner and curator of Gordart Gallery which ran until 2009 as a space for developmental art and gave a platform to many new artists who have since gone on to achieve critical acclaim.
Triangulate the Death Rate ends on 17 August 2010.
