OPPITAFEL X 2010 - An exhibition in two parts by Artspace Gallery
On the Table
Under the Table
Turn the Table
Bring to the Table
Come to the Table
From the Table
Artspace presents its regular year end showcase exhibition, OPPITAFEL. This is the tenth anniversary of Oppitafel which has seen a diverse collection of artists and designers exhibit under an array of curatorial themes.
This year's Oppitafel brief to the artists was simple: - THE TABLE.
A utilitarian object that was among the first items of furniture invented by "civilised" man, the table has formed the basis for most societal interactions, be they business, political, social, familial and functional.
The terms listed above refer to the ethical and management styles of people and how they approach their interpersonal relationships. The people who take decisions about our money, our lifestyles, our politics are negotiators, adversaries, ethical, unethical, inclusive, exclusive, aggressive or innovators.
The personal, being political, means that these phrases also denote a great deal about how the powers of the world operate. The etymology of the phrases is simple. It's all about what happens around a table - physically, and metaphorically.
Once again, we have approached a selection of South African artists to reflect on what the table means to them, in the context of the world, country and community they live in.
